What is the average number of credit inquiries that is acceptable or normal?

free annual credit report
daisy_77375 asked:

We have been working on our credit and I have paid perfect on my car for two years and just recently recieved a small credit card and I have paid that perfect also. I am ready to trade in my car but I am going to wait till December of this year probably at which point my # of inquiries will have dropped significantly. I didn’t realise the damage I was doing until one day I realized I had some where around 65-70 inquiries. I have since then left my credit alone other than disputes and my annual free credit report by December I will be down to only 16 inquiries and I do not have but maybe two carge off accounts that are over three years old so hopefully my hard work has paid off I was just wondering what an average amount of inquiries is that doesn’t seem to do as much damage to the credit scores is?

  • CHAZ2006:

    1-2 at the most

  • SPIFIMAN1:

    1-2 every 3-months.

As far as your next car it will not matter because all inquiries mad within a 14-day period will be lumped to together and only count as one, they will all show but your credit will only be dinged once.

  • Alex:

    1-3 Every 3 Months.

  • Bob:

    1 or 2 in 6 months.

This does not count a clump of inquiries from mortgage companies or a clump from car companies, which get treated as 1 because you can only get one purchase loan per car or one first mortgage per purchase, therefore it is assumed that you are rate shopping.

This also does not count “soft” inquiries which are not the result of an application for credit, such as someone you already have a credit card with checking for changes in status.
