free annual credit report
amanda panda asked:

i tried to get my free annual credit report, and when i did, i had to answer a security question to prove who i was. the question was “our records indicate that you have opened a mortgage in Feb of ‘08 with one of the following banks, which one?”
then it gave me a list. i didn’t open a mortgage of any kind, ever, so i chose “none of the above”.
now it is telling me that my info is incorrect and i can’t get my credit report. i called all the banks on the list, and none of them have a mortgage taken out in my name. i have to send out all my personal info (copy of ss card, drivers license, address, utility bills, etc) to someplace in GA, to get my report by mail and i don’t feel comfortable with that. i have called all 3 bureaus and none of them have people i can talk to. it’s all machines that can’t help me. my bank told me the best i can do is apply for a small loan to get a report. will they even do that? how do i know my identity isn’t being used? is there anyplace i can call?

Use the annualcreditreport toll-free number to order your reports by mail. Sounds like you may have problems that need attention.

Wow, I was going to tell you that you only get 1 free a year so if you applied for a loan or anything then they looked up your credit report and that would be considered your 1 free one. i **** to hear though that it is that screwed up so keep trying to find answers and try to get it figured out asap just in case someone is using your number or something. Good luck

Try one of the other credit reporting services, like Equifax. Each one will give you a free credit report once a year. I don’t think they all ask the same security questions.
