Errors on credit report, how to fix?

My husband checked his credit via the annual free credit report for the first time in his life and we came across something odd…all of his father’s debts are on his credit report! His mortgage from 1977 (my husband wasn’t even born yet) and his car loans and everything. It’s co-mingled with my husbands debts.

They have the same name, but obviously different social security numbers. How could this have happened? I know for a fact he’s never use his father’s social to apply for credit and his father has never used his.

Where do we even begin to get this sorted out? Do we have to hire a lawyer? Could it take a lot of time? We’re trying to buy a house and this would clearly raise some red flags to the underwriters.

This is why it’s so important to review your credit reports every year. The credit bureaus are just vast data bases reflecting what is reported to them and, as the saying goes, “garbage in equals garbage out.” Follow the dispute procedures on each credit bureau’s website. Unfortunately, it has to be done separately with each of them.

    Do me one more favor.
Look again under Experian or Equifax - can’t remember which one.
Look in a section called Other Identification
If your his dad’s ss number is in there this could be the root of all the evil.
    This is hard to remove.
Keep a notebook and everytime you do something, write the date on the top of the page. Keep organized.
This may take some time to dispute.

Now, you may be able to apply for a home loan.
My 3 competing mortgage companies did not look at my score.
They looked at my reports in detail.
They actually asked me questions - like why so many new open store cards.
I told them I had no idea I was moving at the time.
If you need your home soon - you may be able to talk to them.

On the Trans Union credit report, there should be a reference number on the top right hand side. Call the customer service # toll free @ 1-800-916-8800, then type or say the reference #. That should transfer you to a live person.

I don’t have the answer to all of your questions. However, there are some things that you CAN do to repair your credit.

I recommend trying the free course at They show you how to improve your credit on your own for free, including removing negative items, and it worked well for me.
